The IRS is unveiling a new, customer-focused plan that will result in many changes for the organization. Among the new innovations we can expect are improvements to telephone service, online services, overall performance, audits, and Web design.
Here are some sample changes we can expect in the near future:
- Phone service will be improved so that it will be easier for taxpayers to call the agency and get accurate information quickly. This service should be in place by the end of July.
- Taxpayer data will be transferred from 1960's era tape storage to a more modern system. This transfer should take place by the end of 2001.
- By next spring it is expected that tax refunds for electronic filers will be processed in two to three days instead of the current five to seven weeks.
- Within the coming year the IRS plans to be able to initiate audits in the year a tax return is filed instead of the current two to three years.
- Within the coming year, tax preparers will be able to register online with the IRS.
- The entire IRS Web site, which contains several hundred thousand pages of text and graphics, will be redesigned. It is expected that the redesign will be ready to debut January 1, 2002, in time for the next tax season.
