Manhattan has cows, Saginaw has hares, New Orleans has fish, Norfolk has mermaids, and Bloomington, IL has giant ears of corn. These are just a few of the many structures gracing, or grazing, the streets and parks of cities nationwide.
While cities embrace this latest craze, businesses can gain promotional exposure and a tax deduction by sponsoring the streetside artwork. Art pieces can cost $2,000 to $3,500 which includes an honorarium to the artist.
Expectations are that at least three dozen cities will participate in this type of outside sculpture display this summer, and there seems to be no end to the originality of the curbside critters. St. Paul has dancing Snoopys to honor its famous son, Charles Schultz, moose are wandering the streets of Toronto, and Lexington, KY has horses. What's next?
