At a February 26 press conference, IRS officials announced the launch of the Small Business and Self-Employed Community page on the IRS website. The Small Business page is the first segment of the IRS website to be revamped.
IRS Commissioner Charles O. Rossotti said that the IRS was trying to provide information in the most convenient way to make the tax burden of small business as light as possible. Through the Web page, the IRS has tailored the website to provide information needed by a specific group of taxpayers. "It's a step forward to meeting the needs of taxpayers," Mr. Rossotti said.
"It's a user-friendly website," said IRS Commissioner of the Small Business and Self-Employed (SB/SE) Division Joseph Kehoe. He called his division's launch of the Web page the "first visible outreach effort to small business."
Mr. Kehoe advised that the IRS had partnered with trade associations and practitioner groups in devising content for the Web page. The National Association of Home Builders, the National Restaurant Association, the National Federation of Independent Business, Associated General Contractors of America and others assisted the IRS.
Content for the small business Web page includes: answers to basic tax questions; calendar of tax filing deadlines; access to many IRS forms and publications; news; links to community resources; links to court opinions, rulings and regulations; links to state tax information; and links to resource sites such as the U.S. Small Business Administration, the American Bar Association, American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and others.
Both tax and non-tax information is provided on new business startups. In addition, the Web page will include tax tips and common tax problems for a number of industries. Initially, information is provided on the construction and restaurant industries.
Senate Small Business Committee Chairman Christopher S. "Kit" Bond praised the Web page. In an IRS joint news release, Mr. Bond said, "The IRS's new website for the Small Business/Self-Employed Division is a great step forward in the agency's quest to provide better service to small business taxpayers. Now, small business owners can click on-line, answer questions, obtain forms, and stay up to date on tax issues quickly and easily."
The Web page may be accessed by clicking on the Small Business and Self- Employed Community link on the IRS's homepage at http://www.irs.gov. For an alternate way to reach the site, click on "Preview Our New Look" at the bottom of the IRS's homepage, then click on either "Small Business" or "Self- Employed."
