IRS Reports Problem with TeleFile System

A reported glitch in the IRS's TeleFile system may leave certain file-by-phone users waiting and waiting for their refunds. The problem reported by the IRS on Tuesday could cause some taxpayers' refund checks to be sent to the wrong address.

The problem affects taxpayers who have moved within the last year and who have an apartment number as part of their mailing address. In these situations, a programming error has dropped part of the apartment number when transferring the change of address to the TeleFile system.

The IRS is cautioning those affected taxpayers to use the TeleFile service only if they are receiving a refund and are electing to have their refund directly deposited into a personal savings or checking account. "Otherwise, your refund or balance due notice will be mailed to an incorrect address," according to the IRS's Problem Alert. "Undeliverable refunds can take up to 90 days to process and reissue."
