The Internal Revenue Service issues a statement on Wednesday that made clear its position on charities, churches and tax-exempt groups who support or oppose political candidates.
Wrong, wrong, wrong.
According to the documentation, the IRS said these organizations cannot 'endorse any candidates, make donations to their campaigns, engage in fund raising, distribute statements or become involved in any other activities that may be beneficial or detrimental to any candidate.'
The Service issued a similar statement in 1992 and 1996. This time, penalties could be as severe as any one organization losing their tax-exempt status and having to pay an excise tax on any money spent.
