CPA profession creates doctoral scholars program

The CPA profession has created an Accounting Doctoral Scholars program to help reverse a shortage of Ph.D. accounting faculty in U.S. colleges and universities. The new program is being spearheaded by the largest accounting firms and will be administered by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants Foundation. To date, more than 70 of the country’s biggest firms, along with several state CPA societies, have committed a total of $15 million to the program.

Who's teaching today's kids to balance their bank account?

Summer is almost over and parents should be worried, not about back-to-school shopping, but whether or not their children are learning how to budget, save and invest in their futures. A survey released by Visa showed that only 5 percent of adults learned about the vital life skill of money management in elementary or high school - a surprisingly low number.The Visa survey of 1,000 cardholders also found that less than half of people (48 percent) learned about money management from their parents while 41 percent were self-taught or learned the hard way.

A new online governmental accounting certificate program was developed collaboratively by the University of Georgia Center for Continuing Education and the Carl Vinson Institute of Government. The program was created to address the growing demand and shortage of financial workers.The "demand for accountants has exploded," according to Charles Ingersoll, principal at Korn/Ferry International, a recruiting and staffing firm, in a recent Washington Post article.

Deloitte and AAA to award Wildman Medal to three outstanding academics

The Deloitte Foundation, a not-for-profit arm of Deloitte & Touche USA LLP, and the American Accounting Association (AAA) have confirmed the winners of the 2007 Deloitte/AAA Wildman Medal. The team of three outstanding members of the academic community who will receive the honor includes Professor Vivien Beattie, University of Glasgow; and Professors Stella Fearnley and Richard Brandt, University of Portsmouth, all from the United Kingdom.

CFPs face new ethics standards

On May 31, 2007, the Board of Directors of Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards, Inc. (CFP Board) announced the adoption of an updated Standards of Professional Conduct, which sets forth the ethical standards for CFP professionals. CFP professionals found in violation of CFP Board's ethical standards may be subject to public discipline, up to a permanent revocation of the right to use the CFP® marks.The updated Standards will become effective July 1, 2008.

The American College lures FPA members to retirement coaching program

The American College has entered into an agreement with the Financial Planning Association (FPA) to provide FPA members with money saving discounts if they enroll in The College's CASL Retirement Coaching Program. FPA members who have earned their CFP certification will be eligible to receive up to $210 in savings toward a CASL designation from The American College. Other FPA members interested in enrolling in the CASL program can save up to $90.

Deloitte & Touche teamed up with the Chicago Public Schools to sponsor a mentoring program aimed at developing the skills of Chicago-area students pursuing careers in accounting, business, ethics and finance. More than 100 Deloitte employees were to venture outside their offices to serve as guest teachers to 1,200 students.

UVA Students Win KPMG Audit Competition

KPMG selected a team of four students from the University of Virginia as winners of an inaugural six-week national audit case competition. The accounting department of the University of Virginia received a cash prize of $25,000. Cash prizes of $15,000 and $10,000 were also awarded to the accounting departments from the University of Georgia and the University of Wisconsin for their respective teams' second and third place finishes.

Washington Accountants Rock for Scholarships

Five bands composed of accountants will rock out May 19 in a battle of the bands to raise money for accounting scholarships at two Washington state colleges. Seattle-area bands including Disregarded Entity, Accounting Crows, Industry Audit Guys, Facial Depreciation, and Terminal Liability will participate in the second annual Battle of the Bands.The players are all members of the Washington Society of Certified Public Accountants. The money raised will go toward accounting scholarships at Highline Community College and Central Washington University.

California Legislative Staff Takes Financial Wellbeing Class

California legislative staff members recently received briefings on how to improve their money management abilities.Conducted by the California Society of CPAs (CalCPA) and CalCPA Institute, the program covered debt and credit management, retirement planning, home mortgages and saving for college.Assembly members Fiona Ma and Roger Niello, themselves CPAs, sponsored the program, which was held at the Capitol.The program was part of a CalCPA community outreach effort designed to improve Californians' financial literacy.

Monitoring Your Clients' Life Changes

A survey of more than 1,000 taxpayers found that 55 percent of Americans don't know about or won't claim credits and deductions triggered by some of life's most celebrated events.The survey by H&R Block reveals that more than half of taxpayers whose life situation changed last year through marriage, having a baby, buying a home or changing jobs remain unaware of major tax benefits available to them.

Even though any accounting auditor would tell you it seems like there are an awful lot of tax accountants out there, surely one-third of the country isn't made up of tax preparers, so it's rather startling news to learn that one-third of Americans like to do their taxes. Who knew?
