California Legislative Staff Takes Financial Wellbeing Class

California legislative staff members recently received briefings on how to improve their money management abilities.Conducted by the California Society of CPAs (CalCPA) and CalCPA Institute, the program covered debt and credit management, retirement planning, home mortgages and saving for college.Assembly members Fiona Ma and Roger Niello, themselves CPAs, sponsored the program, which was held at the Capitol.The program was part of a CalCPA community outreach effort designed to improve Californians' financial literacy.

Monitoring Your Clients' Life Changes

A survey of more than 1,000 taxpayers found that 55 percent of Americans don't know about or won't claim credits and deductions triggered by some of life's most celebrated events.The survey by H&R Block reveals that more than half of taxpayers whose life situation changed last year through marriage, having a baby, buying a home or changing jobs remain unaware of major tax benefits available to them.

e-Filing Tip: Form 8886, Reportable Transaction Disclosure Statement

Previously, Form 8886 needed to be e-filed in XML format as part of the electronically filed return. Now, it can also be attached as a PDF.Taxpayers required to file electronically can provide the Form 8886 in either XML as part of the electronic return file or as a PDF attachment. Taxpayers electing to include Form 8886 as a PDF attachment must use the most current version of the form as posted on IRS.gov, Forms and Pubs, and the file should be described as "Form 8886".

The National Society of Accountants (NSA) is offering the “ABA Crash Course and Exam” August 13-15, 2007, at the Portland Marriott Waterfront in Portland, Ore., immediately preceding the NSA Annual Meeting.The program includes a two-day cram course covering the five topics to be tested on the exam.

The 2006 Public Accounting Report's (PARs) Annual Professor's Study has published its list of the top accounting programs in the country and The Mason School of Business at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Va., was listed in the top 25. William and Mary was one of four schools which made the top undergraduate top 25 list after having been unranked in last year's survey.

Firms Conduct School District Management, Accounting & Audits

Accounting firms are in the business of providing services to firms and organizations, even school districts, apparently. The Flint [Michigan] Journal reports that the firm Plante & Moran has signed a contract to perform the functions of their departed chief financial officer (CFO) until June 30, 2007, or until a new CFO is selected by the district. By the terms of the contract, Plante & Moran receive $14,000 a month, the salary and benefits for its former CFO, according to district officials.

Thanksgiving Will Cost You More than Calories

Don’t count on the airfare wars to save you any money at Thanksgiving, which is traditionally the busiest travel time of the year.Delta Airlines has led the way with fare reductions on flights through Dec. 12, although “Black Wednesday,” the day before Thanksgiving Day, and the weekend afterward, are blacked out.
