CPE Price War Erupts!

Increased competition has forced Practitioners Publishing Company to come close to the pricing structure offered by the AICPA.AICPA will price its online CPE at an annual fee of $95 for what it calls 'all-you-can-eat' online CPE, while the PPC fee will be $99 for any and all courses CPAs and others want to take to satisfy their educational requirements. The PPC courses are called 'one-stop-shop.'Note that this is for 'online' CPE only. PPC courses already are online at the www.ppcuniversity.com site.

AICPA Gets Green Light for Internet Portal

AICPA Council Members voted at the Spring Council meeting to proceed with the new Internet portal project, called 'cpa2biz.com.' The portal will be set up as a separate, publicly traded business, and already has received $107 million in start-up venture capital funding.Plans for the portal include offering business services for the profession, including CPE training, a national directory of firms, and information on technical topics.

Hot News: ITA is Newest AICPA Member Section

In a revolutionary move, the AICPA and the Information Technology Alliance (ITA) have announced the integration of the ITA into the Institute as a firm and company membership division.Called the 'Information Technology Alliance Section,' the ITA is counting on the support from AICPA to help serve its community of CPAs and non-CPAs, and reciprocally for the AICPA's membership interested in information technology consulting.The AICPA's governing body approved the integration on May 21st at its Spring Council meeting

Treasury Seeks To Curb Tax Shelters

The Wall Street Journal today reported that Treasury Secretary Lawrence Summers has asked a core group of some of the nation’s top accountants, lawyers and investment firms to join him in a series of meetings to limit corporate tax shelters.According to reports, Summers and the group will focus on how to strengthen the Treasury’s rules that govern the various professions, like accounting, that are associated with the tax-shelter industry.In addition to helping solve the problem, any further legislation related to this area looks like it will not happen this year.

AICPA Begins New CPE Program

The AICPA has developed a new CPE program designed to award ‘fellow’ status to practitioners who gain 64 credits over a three-year time period, including 16 hours of personal and leadership development courses.The announcement was made during a meeting in Dallas of CPE instructors.The program is expected to begin in September, and was created so that the Institute could increase sales in its training products area.

In the very near future, CPAs may be able to verify and test a computer system's reliability, based on four principles of availability, security, integrity and maintainability.
