VAT on more than one business
I have a client that has three sole trader businesses. They are all very different. One is a sandwich shop another is an residential lettings agency and the other is a mailbox and fedex agent.
The residential lettings agency and the mailbox and fedex agent are run from the offices that are above one of the sandwich shops. Her previous accountant registerd the lettings agency but not the fedex agency, she has now bought a sandwich shop too. I thought that as long as the business trades were very different as they are, she would not have to register for VAT if the combined turnover, exceeded the threshold. However, i have spoken to another accountant regarding it and he has said that is the combined turnover for that person and therefore she should be registered.
Can anyone clarify for me please or direct me to the relevant VAT notice?

Which isn’t completely true. I mean, occasionally I drop by when I manage to sneak out of the nonstop frat party over at Going Concern, but I’m mostly a wallflower over there. I’m happy to say that I’ve been given express permission (or explicit orders, if you like) to wander over here to AccountingWEB more often.
Why is that, you might ask? My job is to replace the irreplaceable Gail Perry as Editor-in-Chief. What does that mean? I don’t really know! I think it’ll be fun getting a feel for things, throwing in my own thoughts here and there, and listening to the discussions you’re having about the accounting profession.
