Thanks to a recent doughnut sale fundraiser and household items drive, the Dickinson State University Accounting Club donated much-needed goods for people in need and nearly $200 to a not-for-profit charitable organization in Dickinson, North Dakota.
Each year, the club holds a fundraiser or service project that benefits a local not-for-profit group or charity. The fundraiser has previously supported a local youth camp and a service team that traveled to Guatemala to build houses. This year, the club chose the House of Manna, which provides donated clothing, household goods, small appliances, and furniture free of charge to people in need living within a hundred-mile radius of Dickinson.
"The need in the Dickinson community has been great, as we are in the midst of an oil boom. There have been families and individuals flocking to the area in need of household items, clothing, and more," Ashley Stark, CPA, an assistant professor of accounting at Dickinson State University and Accounting Club advisor, told AccountingWEB. "We believe it is important to use our knowledge and efforts to give back to the local community."
The annual fundraiser, "Tax Day Tasties," is usually held on April 15. However, this year the Dickinson community had more than fifteen inches of snow on tax day, which shut down the university. The event was rescheduled to April 17.
Accounting Club members sold "gold bars" – doughnuts covered in yellow frosting – for fifty cents to students as well as to local accounting and CPA firms, Stark says. Baker Boy Bake Shop Inc., a local baked goods manufacturer, donated the doughnuts, and Dan's Supermarket provided the yellow frosting, all free of charge, she adds.
"The club gave every penny to the House of Manna from the doughnut sale, and we were able to cut a check for $192.81," Stark says.
The club also held an item drive for the House of Manna for three months in the spring semester leading up to the Tax Day Tasties event.
"Through posters, e-mails, and word of mouth, members of the Dickinson State University community supported the project in abundance," Stark says.
During the three-month item drive, Accounting Club members hauled about twelve carloads of household goods – clothing, coats, books, kitchen supplies, bedding, and small appliances – to the House of Manna.
"We delivered the items over time because the volume was too much to store," Stark says. "It was all because of the generosity of Dickinson State University faculty, staff, and students that so much was collected."
Stark believes the doughnut sale fundraiser and the three-month item drive were very successful.
"Every week when we went to empty the bins of items that were donated, the students were encouraged by the generosity of the campus, and they enjoyed cajoling their friends and colleagues to support the fundraiser and buy a doughnut for the cause," she concludes. "The students could see the value of their contributions of time and dedication to support those in need or those who are down on their luck."
