Lead the Charge for Financial Planning
A recent consumer survey showed that 36 percent of American households have prepared a comprehensive financial plan. That number seems high to me, but, nevertheless, these results point out that there is work to be done, and we accountants are the ones who need to lead the charge.
It's not enough to help our clients with their taxes. We are on the front line in helping our clients see the importance of thoughtful and workable long-range financial planning. You don't have to be a certified financial planner to read the numbers and know if the path your clients are on is going to lead to a comfortable life and a secure retirement. If you don't want or aren't equipped to handle the extra work, team with a financial planning expert and point your clients in the direction of budgeting and planning for today and for the future. If you don't, it's likely someone else will.
