Bah Humbug - Tax Season is Almost Here
The Holidays are upon us and instead of feeling the joy; I have this feeling of “Oh God - tax season is almost here.” I know I am not alone; many public accountants get the tax season blues. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy certain aspects of tax season. I enjoy the challenge of applying new tax law and the continual learning that is necessary to stay abreast of tax law changes. I manage a department and take pride in getting multiple jobs out the door on a daily basis but I can’t lie, I don’t enjoy the stress. Tax season brings out the best and worst in people. After weeks of continual stress and long hours, tempers get short and frustrations acted out. I recall a tax season many years ago in a previous firm, where a partner lost his temper, slammed his door and got stuck in his office. The door literally came off the hinges and wedged itself in the frame. For many years, we all got a good chuckle out of remembering the passing of notes to the caged partner under his door. Many hours later, maintenance managed to get the door open and free him. I also remember a previous firm referring to tax season as busy season and hearing a speech by a very articulate partner about approaching it like the playoffs. Motivational speeches, inspiring words, all spoken to alleviate stress and provide the staff words of encouragement.
So as I prepare for Christmas and New Year’s celebrations, I will try not to dwell on the fact that January 1 is the start of another tax season. I, as many public accountants do, will try and savor the moment, enjoy the Holidays and not be a bean counting scrooge. But honestly, I can’t believe tax season is here again….
