Perkins & Co. organizes Taxgiving celebration
It's not quite April 15th, but at Perkins & Co. , a Portland, OR-based accounting firm, employees already are giving thanks for the upcoming end of tax season.
And, they have a lot to look forward to, according to the company. During busy season, Perkins' 84 professionals average 55 hours a week, often staying late and working on weekends. While the firm tries to ease the pain with free beverages and snacks, dinners and weekend lunches, massages, and monthly doughnut and dessert days, nothing feels quite as good as sleeping in on April 16th - a holiday for Perkins employees.
With the ongoing struggles of the Oregon economy, this year has been different from past years. "More focus and attention has been on meeting with and listening to our clients. It's our job to help them make it through the rough patches and offer an ear to their concerns," said Dave Sullivan, shareholder. "We are fortunate to work with some of the most dynamic and innovative companies in the Portland metro area."
This season has felt different in the office as well, according to the company. With the Oregon unemployment rate over 10 percent, having a job to come to each day is a something to appreciate - even if it means putting in the long hours the busy season requires. And employees haven't taken it for granted.
"This year, there's been more involvement than ever. Our employees want to help the firm grow," Sullivan said. "It's a real testament to our culture and the commitment of our staff."
