The report, released Wednesday, also said that companies are beginning to move a greater amount of insurance costs to their employees, and reducing benefits for mental health illnesses and coverage to retirees.
Almost all of the companies surveyed with 200 or more employees reported they provided health coverage, while only 60 percent of small businesses provide any coverage at all. Experts believe that the lack of small to medium-size businesses providing health coverage is the main reason why the number of uninsured Americans rose from 39 million to 44 million in a four-year period from 1994 to 1998.
