The IRS has added a new page to its web site. You can enter the amount of tax you paid in 1999 and click a pizza pie slicer – the result will be a breakdown of the major categories of government spending with a listing of how much of your tax dollars went to each category.
The breakdown appears as follows:
16% National Defense
6% Medicaid
11% Medicare
14% Unemployment, disability, other income
23% Social Security
13% Interest payments
17% Other
Besides breaking down your tax dollars into the above categories, you can click on any one of the categories for a more detailed description of what is included in the categories.
The site also provides a general list of other government budget items and the total tax dollars allocated to those items.
