National Taxpayer Advocate Leaves IRS

The National Taxpayer Advocate, W. Val Oveson, says he will leave the Internal Revenue Service [1] this fall and return to Utah and the private sector.

Oveson was instrumental in implementing many taxpayer advocate programs during his two years with the IRS, most notably the appointment of similar positions in each state that reported to him rather than district directors. This helped facilitate assistance to the taxpayer by keeping the chain of communications open and red tape to a minimum.

Oveson did not comment as to what position he will assume in Utah; previously, he held the high profile positions of lieutenant governor and director of the Utah State Tax Commission.

A successor to fill his position at the national level has not yet been named.
