Tax Breaks for Dutch Witches
“Once you become a witch…you can pass along things you have learned,” Margarita Rongen, operator of the “Witches Homestead” in the northern Friesland province told the AP. She has passed on her knowledge of an earth religion some say predates Christianity to more than 160 students over nearly four decades, according to the AP. One of those students brought the current case to court, according to The Independent. The AP reports the cost of a weekend witchcraft seminar is $206 and a full witchcraft course, including 13 weekends, is $2,678.
“Under the circumstances, the cost of a course to become a witch qualifies as school fees,” the AP quotes a letter from Junior Finance Minister Joop Wijn in response to a question from lawmaker Pieter Omtzigt.
Rongen believes it is the word “witch” that has attracted world attention to the case according to The Independent. Other witches agree adding that allowing the cost of religious education to be deducted from taxes would be applauded if it were a “mainstream” religion.
