Texas A&M professor wins Outstanding Educator award
At a ceremony held Oct. 24 during the TSCPA Accounting Education Conference, Shaub received a plaque and a $1,000 award provided by the TSCPA Accounting Education Foundation.
The statewide TSCPA Outstanding Accounting Educator Awards honor Texans who have demonstrated excellence in teaching and who have distinguished themselves through active service to the accounting profession. Criteria for judging includes instructional innovation, student motivation, the pursuit of learning opportunities for students, involvement in student and professional accounting organizations, and research accomplishments and publications.
Shaub strives to motivate students by establishing a personal relationship with each student. In his last two fall semesters, he taught 207 and 193 students, respectively, and made a point to know each one of his students’ names and a little bit about them. He incorporates the professional environment in discussions whenever possible and he puts emphasis on ethical conduct. He places his students in Ethics Accountability Groups for an annual project where they analyze the opportunities, motivations and rationalization for cheating in his course by preparing a report and presentation. This deepens their understanding of internal controls and the fraud assessment process that they will use in real life situations.
As a clinical professor, Shaub focuses his research efforts on issues with practical implications for the profession. He has also been researching accounting ethics, trust and professional skepticism for the last 20 years, resulting in a dissertation, many articles and publications and book reviews. He is also a member of the American Institute of CPAs and the Texas Society of CPAs and is affiliated with the Brazos Valley chapter.
TSCPA is a nonprofit, voluntary, professional organization representing Texas CPAs. The society has 20 local chapters statewide and has 28,000 members, one of the largest in-state memberships of any state CPA society in the United States. TSCPA is committed to serving the public interest with programs that advance the highest standards of ethics and practice within the CPA profession.
