IRS Publicizes Tax Scams
The Criminal Investigation unit is the law enforcement arm of the IRS. CI cites its mission as serving the American public by investigating potential criminal violations of the Internal Revenue Code and related financial crimes in a manner that fosters confidence in the tax system and compliance with the law.
The site includes reports of fraud schemes that are currently in the press, such as the African American Tax Refund Scam whereby African Americans are being offered reparations for slavery in the form of tax refunds and credits, and the Social Security Refund Hoax , whereby taxpayers are being offered an opportunity to receive tax refunds for Social Security taxes they have paid during their lifetimes.
In scams such as these, taxpayers are asked to pay a nominal fee to have someone prepare the forms and paperwork to apply for the refund, where no such refund actually exists.
Information about these and other scams will continue to be made available at the new Criminal Investigation site. Citizens are encouraged to report suspected tax scams to the CI unit by calling 1-800-829-0433.
