Excel 2007 Tip #2: Formatting is now done via the right mouse menu
People with prior versions of Excel usually have two toolbars permanently on display – Standard and Formatting. The Formatting toolbar contains the icons for adjusting fonts, centring, bold, italic decimals, colors and so on.
In Excel 2007, formatting is no longer done via toolbars, but via the right mouse menu.
To illustrate, open up a worksheet, then right click on it. The right mouse menu appears. You see that a block of formatting icons is now floating just above it.
This is new. When you want to do some formatting, the procedure now is:
Step 1 – with the mouse, highlight the piece of text you wish to format.
Step 2 – right click the mouse, then click on one of the icons above the menu to apply the format.
This is a good idea, since you no longer have to move right up to the top of the screen to click on the formatting icons. But it is a major cultural change and you need to be aware of it.
