Becoming a Trusted Advisor

Presented by: David Maister

Tuesday October 17, 2000
4:00pm EDT,
The AccountingWEB Workshop Room [1]
Workshop sponsored by the International Group of Accounting Firms [2]

IGAF [2]

The Godfather had it wrong when it said, "It ain't personal, it's business." The truth is--"It is business and it is personal. VERY personal!"

Nowhere is this linkage more clear than in the role of giving business advice.

"Advisors and clients alike often think that technical excellence alone is all that is needed to solve business problems. Like the emperor and his new clothes, they are kidding themselves," say David Maister, Charles Green and Rob Galford. Technical ability is indeed necessary--but is not sufficient. Before you can get anyone to accept your advice, you first have to get them to trust you with their problems. And few of us are ever taught how to win someone's trust and confidence.
