IRS Offers Low Income Taxpayer Clinic Grants
The National Taxpayer Advocate, Nina E. Olsen, sees funding of clinics for low income taxpayers along with tax representation that is free or offered for a minimal fee as a significant step toward a more equitable tax system.
Nonprofit organizations providing free or nominal fee representation to individuals involved in tax disputes can apply for grants of up to $100,000 for the 2006 grant cycle. Grant s are also available for organizations informing those for whom English is not a native or primary language of their tax rights and responsibilities. New clinics may also apply for grants to help cover start-up expenditures during the 2006 grant cycle. The IRS matching grant program encourages the establishment and operation of low income taxpayer clinics across the nation.
Low income taxpayer clinics provide an important resource to those who may not be able to afford a tax professional.
