Best Cities for Business

Fortune Magazine has announced its annual listing of the Best Cities for Business [1] and the surprise is - there are no surprises.

New York, San Francisco, Chicago, Washington DC, and San Jose top the list. All old-time favorites, all with a technology focus behind them.

The survey was conducted [2] by Arthur Andersen who interviewed 1,400 top ranking executives to complete the study.

What are the factors driving the locations of the top cities for business? The answer is not tax rates, or even the quality of public education. What's driving executives to embrace a warm business climate is cities with a pro-business attitude, entrepreneurial activity, and a local supply of managers and professionals.

London, Hong Kong, and Buenos Aires top the Europe, Asia, and South America lists for the Winners of the World [3], with many of the same qualities cited.

What does all of this mean? According to Fortune Magazine, their list "is a good indicator of not only where business is thriving today but also where it will be happening tomorrow. "
