The infographic was released in honor of Small Business Saturday. Held on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, Small Business Saturday is a day to celebrate and show support for small businesses. Paychex collected the data by conducting a payroll survey of America's small businesses.

The 2012 Paychex Payroll Study was commissioned in April 2012, and data was collected between May 16 and June 1, 2012. Paychex surveyed 1,186 small businesses with employee counts ranging from 1 to 99.
