Executive integrity is largely intact and on target, according to an online poll conducted in January by the Dallas chapter of the International Association of Business Communicators (Dallas/IABC).
The poll questioned business communicators in 14 IABC chapters throughout Texas, Arizona, Colorado, Kansas, New Mexico and Oklahoma, asking the question, "How often have you felt like management has asked you to compromise your integrity?"
The Quick Poll finds:
- Approximately 30 percent of responding communicators saying they have been asked to compromise their integrity often, very often or extremely often.
- Some of these, 10 percent of responding communicators, say they've been asked to compromise their "extremely often."
- 69 percent of responding communicators have "never" or "not often" been asked by management to compromise their integrity.
"The good news is that most communicators responding to the Quick Poll have rarely worked for a manager or executive who's asked them to do something illegal or inappropriate," said Don Klausmeyer, ABC, Dallas/IABC president. "The bad news is that we have 30 percent who have. Of course we recommend that communicators -- or any other employee -- not shoulder that responsibility or accept that behavior and to act immediately to notify executives, corporate board members or others who can navigate them through the problem. Unfortunately, in the pressures of the work environment those options may not be readily apparent," he added.
The Quick Poll is online and available at www.dallasiabc.com. It's an interactive Web site feature that provides a timely snapshot of what chapter members and other site visitors think about current issues and trends.
