KPMG LLP, the U.S. audit, tax and advisory firm, has kicked off its summer internship program for over 1,500 student interns from across the country with a week-long training event in Anaheim, CA. The training program includes technical, leadership, networking and community service components. The majority of KPMG's new campus hires traditionally come from internships, making the program an important part of the firm's growth strategy.
"The training gives us an opportunity to welcome the students and really familiarize them with the firm's leadership and culture," said Manny Fernandez, KPMG's national managing partner of university relations and recruiting. "We work hard to make sure that they have a successful internship and come away excited about the potential of a challenging and rewarding career at KPMG."
In addition to learning about firm procedures and technical skills, this year the national training event features ethics and integrity training along with an introduction to KPMG's Family for Literacy program, a community service outreach initiative that organizes volunteers to fund the purchase of books, conduct reading programs in schools, and work with existing literacy programs to distribute books to children from low income families. All 1,500 students will participate in the program during their internships.
The training concludes with a night at Knott's Berry Farm, where KPMG has rented out the theme park exclusively for its interns and partners attending the training.
During the intern program students receive extensive training and real work experience including audit, tax and advisory client service. They also have the opportunity to experience business travel and participate in mentoring, networking and community service activities.
"All of our interns receive practice-specific experience, exposure to a broad client base, and the opportunity to interact and work with KPMG professionals from all levels within the firm," said Fernandez.
This year, as part of KPMG's Global Internship Program (GIP), 40 KPMG interns will spend four weeks of their internship at an international location working on multi-national accounts. At the same time, approximately 20 student interns from KPMG member firms around the world will travel and experience training and working in the U.S.
KPMG launched GIP last year to accelerate its professionals' global mobility to better serve the growing number of clients doing business internationally. This summer KPMG will send interns to 20 international destinations, including London, Johannesburg, Shanghai, Stockholm, Bangalore and Melbourne.
Another new opportunity for interns this summer is the chance to participate in KTV, KPMG's first-ever employee video challenge, which will include intern teams creating 60- to 90-second videos that show how they are living one of KPMG's strategic priorities - Professionalism & Integrity, Employer of Choice, Quality Growth, or Global Strength & Consistency.

Employee Career Architecture - A career planning tool that helps KPMG professionals map out detailed views of potential career paths, along with skills and competencies needed within each step.
Matching Majors - An interactive tool that lets students see if there may be a job for him or her in one of KPMG's professional practice teams based upon their education level and major/field of study in school.
"Build Your Own Internships" - Student interns have the opportunity to elect a primary and a developmental practice, allowing them to experience KPMG across its audit, tax and advisory practices.
Fast Forward Leadership Program- More than 150 top students from across the U.S. and Canada who are two years away from completing their studies are invited to attend a three-day leadership conference hosted and organized by KPMG in Hollywood, CA.
Future Diversity Leaders Program - A leadership program that provides minority students scholarship money, a leadership conference and KPMG internships over a three-year period.
Ethical Compass - An ethics and integrity toolkit developed by KPMG for use as a guide in college classrooms.
