The Illinois CPA Society recently honored Professor James C. Young, CPA, PhD, with its 2012 Outstanding Educator Award. The award recognizes Illinois educators at a community college, college, or university who excel in their leadership and teaching and who have made continuous and outstanding contributions to accounting education in the state.
Dr. Young began teaching in 1981 while a graduate student at Michigan State University after a stint in public accounting. Currently the Crowe Horwath Professor of Accountancy at Northern Illinois University (NIU), Dr. Young also serves as the accountancy department chair and teaches both undergraduate and graduate courses in federal taxation and financial reporting. He developed a new, nationally recognized paradigm for teaching introductory tax courses that helps students better understand, remember, and apply tax knowledge. He also assisted in the development of NIU's Leadership Master of Accounting Science program.
Outside of the classroom, Dr. Young has been extensively published in a wide variety of journals, including the National Tax Journal, Tax Notes and the Journal of Accounting Education and is involved with many professional organizations. He is the current President of the American Accounting Association's Accounting Programs Leadership Group (APLG), serves on the Accounting Accreditation Committee of the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), and is a member of ICPAS, the AICPA and the Illinois Board of Examiners Education Advisory Task Force.
Those who nominated Dr. Young speak of his willingness to mentor junior faculty members as well as his passion and enthusiasm for the subject matter he teaches and his ability to simplify very complex topics for his students.
A resident of St. Charles, Illinois, he received a BS from Ferris State University and an MBA and PhD from Michigan State University.
The Illinois CPA Society recently honored Sheldon P. Holzman, CPA/CFF, CFE, with its 2012 Lifetime Achievement Award for his commitment to the society as well as his overall contributions and professional achievements.
Since becoming a CPA in 1977, Holzman, a retired partner with Baker Tilly Virchow Krause LLP, has been actively involved in the CPA profession, contributing generously of his time and considerable professional expertise. In 1990, after being with two national firms, including a large local firm, he joined Kupferberg, Goldberg & Neimark, which later became the Chicago office of Baker Tilly. While with the firm, Holzman served as a partner in the Public Sector Practice Group and led the Forensic, Valuation, and Litigation Services Group. Throughout his career, he assisted clients in implementing new accounting standards, developed accounting and tax planning strategies, and served many for profit and not-for-profit clients.
Over the last three decades, Holzman has served on, and often led, a number of significant committees and task forces of the Illinois CPA Society. His chairmanship of groups, such as the Ethics Committee, Nominating Committee, Committee Structure & Volunteerism Task Force, and the Board of Directors, proved especially valuable as the Illinois CPA Society and its members navigated through new challenges and established new strategic directions.
Holzman's commitment to the future of the CPA profession is further demonstrated by his involvement with the CPA Endowment Fund of Illinois where he currently serves on the board of directors and the Illinois CPAs for Political Action Task Force. His participation at the national level as an AICPA council member and a member of the Illinois CPA Society Federal Legislative Contact group help to keep the issues that are important to the CPA profession front and center with regulators and legislators.
Holzman, a Glenview, Illinois resident, received a BS in commerce with an emphasis on accounting from DePaul University. He is also a member of the National Association of Certified Fraud Examiners and the Association Forum of Chicagoland. He is a licensed CPA in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Nevada, Missouri, and Wisconsin.
