Barnes Dennig, the fifth largest accounting firm in Cincinnati, is proud to announce the addition of Keith Connolly to its team of accountants.
As a co-op at Barnes Dennig, Connolly excelled throughout the busy tax season, providing an extra set of eyes and ears as well as a strong sense of initiative. In his time at Barnes Dennig, he has developed an appreciation for the firm's structure, comprised of industry teams to serve specific niche markets. Connolly graduated from Xavier University with a double major in finance in accounting. He then continued on to earn his MBA in finance, also from Xavier.
BerryDunn, a firm of CPAs and consultants providing financial and business expertise to organizations in New England and across the country, announced that Barbara McGuan has been named to the Board of Governors for the Maine Society of CPAs (MECPA). MECPA is a statewide not-for-profit professional organization representing nearly 1,000 CPAs in business, education, government, and public accounting. Founded in 1924, MECPA provides education, offers member resources, serves as an advocate for CPAs and the public, and promotes the profession.
McGuan will serve a three-year term on MECPA's Board of Governors. She is a principal and member of BerryDunn's Tax Consulting and Compliance Group as well as the firm's Not-for-Profit Group. She provides services in the tax planning and compliance arena, including business and individual taxation as well as tax-exempt reporting.
The Committee of Sponsoring Organizations of the Treadway Commission (COSO) – an organization providing thought leadership and guidance on internal control, enterprise risk management, and fraud deterrence – has named Robert B. Hirth Jr. as its new chairman for a three-year term effective June 3.
A prolific thought leader and renowned risk management and internal control professional, Hirth was selected for this position after a four-month extensive search. The COSO board was particularly impressed by his deep knowledge and experience in risk management and internal control matters, his leadership skills, public speaking experience, and commitment to the success of organizations through effective governance practices.
Hirth is a founding managing director of Protiviti, a global consulting firm of more than 2,500 employees in over twenty countries. He previously served as executive vice president of the Internal Audit and Financial Control practice and as a member of the firm's six-member global Executive Team. He has had significant international responsibilities with the firm assisting practice operations and led the firm's western US region in the initial years of Protiviti's operations.
Hirth has participated in various activities of COSO's five sponsoring organizations, including practicing as a CPA in Texas and California. He is a member of Financial Executives International (FEI) and has been recognized as a thought leader in the internal audit profession. He is currently serving a 2012-2013 term on the Standing Advisory Group of the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB) and was named as one of the Institute of Internal Auditors' latest inductees into the American Hall of Distinguished Audit Practitioners in March 2013.
The COSO board extends its deepest gratitude to David Landsittel for his outstanding service and significant contribution to COSO. During his four-year term as chair, he led significant and notable initiatives, such as the revision of the Internal Control - Integrated Framework. In addition, he encouraged and oversaw the publication of several thought papers, spoke at dozens of conferences, and influenced the global outreach of COSO's mission and guidance. His expertise, insights, and counsel will be missed, and the board wishes him much success in his future endeavors.
ETF Securities (US) LLC announced it has named Mike McGlone, formerly with S&P Indices, to the newly created position of director of research, based in New York.
Before joining S&P, McGlone was the chief strategist at Lyford Group International Ltd., a global macro hedge fund, based in New York. He began his career with Discount Corporation of N.Y. Futures on the Chicago Board of Trade, and he has over twenty years of derivatives trading experience. In 1993, McGlone left the Chicago trading pits to become the OTC options trader for Aubrey G. Lanston & Co. Inc., based in New York. He subsequently joined ABN AMRO as head of North American Futures Research. McGlone holds an MBA from DePaul University in Chicago and a BS and BA from Illinois State University. He is a CFA charter holder and certified Financial Risk Manager (FRM).

The New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants (NYSSCPA) installed Barbara Marino, CPA, of Yorktown Heights, New York, as vice president at its 116th Annual Election Dinner and Meeting held at the New York Marriott Marquis on May 16. Marino is a director in the Finance Transformation Practice at The Hackett Group, a global strategic consulting firm.
Marino, a member of the NYSSCPA since 1992, has been president, president elect, and vice president of the NYSSCPA's Manhattan/Bronx Chapter. She has previously served on the society's statewide board of directors as the Manhattan/Bronx Chapter's representative. Her other previous statewide committee service includes chair, vice chair, and member of the Promoting CPA Careers Committee; member of the Executive, Awards, Nominating, and Practice Management Oversight committees; and member of the Selections Subcommittee. She has also served the Manhattan/Bronx Chapter on its executive board and its Promoting CPA Careers Committee. She received her Bachelor of Accounting from Long Island University, C.W. Post College.
In addition to Marino, the NYSSCPA also installed fifteen other new members to its Board of Directors at Thursday's dinner, including J. Michael Kirkland, CPA, a director at Deutsche Bank, as president.
Rosen Seymour Shapss Martin & Company LLP (RSSM) sponsored a Build-A-Bear Workshop event for seriously ill children who are part of the Starlight Children's Foundation NY*NJ*CT. In addition to sponsoring the event, several employees and their families attended and many others raised money for Starlight for use toward programs to benefit children suffering from various medical illnesses.
The experience is part of Starlight's Great Escapes program, which provides sick children with an opportunity to connect with other kids undergoing similar challenges and helps them break away from the cycle of isolation, depression, and loneliness that often accompanies an illness. Outings and special trips are offered to bring seriously ill children out in the world and help them have normal childhood experiences. Siblings and parents are also a part of Great Escapes, as they have their own needs for socialization and relief from the day-to-day pressures of caring for a sick child.

The Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants (VSCPA) is pleased to recognize thirty-eight members with its 2013 Life Member Award. The prestigious award recognizes those who have been members of the VSCPA for at least forty continuous years. Including this year's inductees, only 371 members have received the coveted Life Member Award in the VSCPA's 103-year history.
Recipients of the Life Member Award will have their annual VSCPA membership dues waived and will continue to receive all benefits extended to VSCPA members, including all services and publications. They are also honored with a special lapel pin and certificate of recognition.

WeiserMazars LLP, a leading New York-based audit, tax, and consultancy firm, and Mazars Group, one of the largest international audit, tax, and consulting organizations, together with Shift, a leading nonprofit center on business and human rights, have issued a ground-breaking discussion paper on the development of global standards for human rights reporting and assurance. They invite comments from all stakeholders over the next month.
The proposed standards will allow companies to demonstrate the extent to which they are aligned with the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, which were developed by Shift's Chair, Professor John Ruggie, and endorsed unanimously by the UN Human Rights Council in June 2011.
The reporting standard will allow companies to issue a Human Rights Statement that demonstrates how their internal policies and processes align with the UN Guiding Principles and assist them on a journey of continuous improvement. The accompanying assurance standard will allow independent, external human rights assurance providers to confirm that the company's Human Rights Statement fairly represents its human rights-related policies and processes.
Mazars and Shift are seeking early consultation on a range of issues through a comprehensive discussion paper available, which is available online. In addition to in-person consultations in the ASEAN region, the project team is seeking comments from all other interested parties by July 1, 2013. Wipfli LLP (Wipfli) announced today it has expanded its Small Business Accounting Services practice with the recent addition of Kelly Runge as a senior manager. In her position, Runge will provide accounting, financial statement preparation, tax planning and compliance, and general business consulting services.
Prior to serving Wipfli, Runge worked for over seven years as the CFO of a group of local construction companies. She also has twelve years for another national public accounting firm where she provided small to midsized businesses with a range of services, from financing and cash flow projections to operations consulting. A certified public accountant, Runge holds a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh.
