A.T. LOCKE, which provides accounting services, business analysis, and financial and strategic guidance to emerging and midsized organizations, has added Adeana Elvin as an accounting analyst on the firm's rapidly growing team.
A certified public accountant with more than two decades of experience concentrated in manufacturing, distribution/logistics, and banking, Elvin is originally from the Caribbean, and holds a BS degree in accounting from Bob Jones University along with an MBA from Webster University.
Prior to joining A.T. LOCKE, she served in a variety of roles with AbitibiBowater, the most recent being that of senior financial analyst; and has also served in accounting and finance capacities with ScanSource and Southern National Bank. She currently is an adjunct professor at both Furman University and at Greenville Technical College, serving on Greenville Tech's Accounting Advisory Committee in addition to her teaching duties.
Elvin will work with a variety of A.T. LOCKE clients across the Upstate from the firm's Greenville headquarters.
Today Baruch College, a senior college in the City University of New York system, announced the appointment of Dr. David P. Christy as its new provost and senior vice president for academic affairs effective this summer. Dr. Christy also will assume a faculty position in the Department of Management in Baruch's Zicklin School of Business.
After a national search that included open meetings with Baruch's faculty, staff, and students, President Mitchel B. Wallerstein is pleased to welcome Dr. Christy as the College's new chief academic officer. "I am delighted that Dr. David Christy, who is currently the Dean of the Orfalea College of Business at the California Polytechnic State University, has accepted my invitation to become the new provost and senior vice president for academic affairs of Baruch College. Dr. Christy's experience as a business educator, researcher, and academic leader is ideally suited to the current needs of the college, but the fact that his background also includes training in and exposure to the arts and sciences leads me to have great confidence that he will be fully responsive to the needs and concerns of the entire institution. We are fortunate to have recruited him, and I look forward to his arrival at the College this summer," said President Wallerstein.
Dr. Jim Gatheral, a professor in the math department and the Masters Program in Financial Engineering (MFE) in the Weissman School of Arts and Sciences at Baruch College, has been named Presidential Professor, effective September 1, 2013, through August 31, 2018.
Gatheral joined Baruch College in August 2010, after a distinguished career in finance, most recently as a managing director at Merrill Lynch, where he led the quantitative research group for seventeen years. Before making his way to New York, Gatheral's work spanned the trading and banking worlds, working out of London and Tokyo.
Gatheral, who is recognized as one of the top quants in the world, has strengthened the MFE program, propelling it to be included among the top five such programs in the world by the end of 2011. The impact of Gatheral on the Baruch MFE program has been significant and multifaceted, leading directly not only to increasing the program's prestige and standing, but also to attracting even stronger students who have since won international competitions, including the Rotman International Trading Competition and the Metaquotes Automated Trading Championship.
Since joining Baruch College, Gatheral published ten papers in the field's leading journals, including Mathematical Finance and Quantitative Finance, and two book chapters in the Encyclopedia of Quantitative Finance, making him one of the most active and highly published academics in the field. Gatheral delivered the keynote address to the Quant Congress in London in 2012, the top conference in financial engineering worldwide. He was also the first-ever keynote speaker for the Bloomberg Quant Seminar in New York in January 2013.
A native of Scotland, Gatheral earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Glasgow, where he majored in mathematics and natural philosophy. He later earned a PhD in theoretical physics at Cambridge University.
Foundation Financial Group employees at the regional sales center in Dallas, Texas, participated in the Be the Match Foundation's Be The One Run. The employees ran in the event and made a monetary donation.
"Over 70 percent of people diagnosed with blood cancers do not have a donor in their family," said Foundation Financial Group Event Coordinator Andrew Postell. "They rely on the Be The Match Registry to find a match to save their lives, which comes down to chance. We believe it's important to raise both funds and awareness for the Be The Match Foundation so that cancer success statistics increase and we beat this horrible disease.
Be The One Run is a walk and run event for people of all ages and fitness levels. It includes a 5k, a 1k, and a short-distance Tot Trot. Be The One Run unites communities nationwide that are determined to help patients with diseases like leukemia and lymphoma. Every step participants take helps patients receive the marrow transplant they need. The Be The One Run raises funds to support transplant research, help patients with uninsured costs, and grow the Be The Match marrow donor registry.
The Be The Match Foundation raises funds and awareness to help all cancer patients in need of a bone marrow donor receive the marrow or cord blood transplant they need, when they need it. Every year 10,000 patients with leukemia, lymphoma and seventy other life-threatening illnesses need a marrow transplant but have no donor match in their family. They depend on Be The Match to help them find an unrelated donor and receive the transplant they need.
"I'm so proud to be able to support this cause," continued Postell. "Many of us have to work; we have bills, families, needs, wants, etc. But when you work at a company and you can go home feeling proud about the work that you accomplished, then it turns into something else besides just a paycheck. You can go home and tell your friends and family how you helped someone. Not only do you feel proud and gratified, but so does your family. No amount of money can measure that emotion. We had a blast participating in the Be The One Run and we cannot wait for the next event."

Foundation Financial Group (FFG) has announced its participation in the seventh annual Walk to End Lupus Now event on Saturday, April 27, at Piedmont Park in Atlanta, Georgia.
The Atlanta walk is the largest Lupus Foundation of America walk in the nation, with over 8,000 supporters descending on Piedmont Park to raise funds and awareness for those with lupus and the Lupus Foundation of America's research and development programs. Based on the enormity and prevalence of lupus, which affects over 1.5 million Americans, mostly young women, ages eighteen to fifty, and minorities - a direct reflection of Foundation Financial's employee demographic - the company has committed its national philanthropic focus to the FFG Ends Lupus Initiative. All funds raised through this initiative will benefit the Lupus Foundation of America's Georgia Chapter.
"Millions of people suffer with lupus and that also includes employees of the FFG Family," said Foundation Financial Event Coordinator Crystal Glen. "This is a cause that hits very close to home for us, and we want to do everything in our power to raise funds and awareness for the End Lupus Now cause."
Through the Atlanta walk, 90 percent of every dollar donated stays in Georgia, ensuring the Georgia Chapter of the Lupus Foundation of America continues to provide and expand the only valuable and free statewide educational programs, advocacy, and awareness efforts, including nine lupus symposiums and new support groups across Georgia. The Chapter is a lifeline and a voice of hope raising awareness and fighting for families affected by lupus. The chapter also supports national research efforts; funding and advocating for investment in lupus. Ten years ago, no one spoke of lupus, there was little awareness and understanding of the signs and symptoms, and very little investment in research. The Lupus Foundation of America has paved the way for those suffering from lupus and today they have a voice.
"I am extremely excited about supporting the Lupus Foundation of America," continued Glen. "We have experienced great success with our past initiatives, and I know we can continue to do a lot of good. We have a great group of people here at FFG who truly care and want to make a difference. FFG Ends Lupus event coordinators have organized an external donation page where anyone who feels compelled to help may do so. The company is also accepting donations internally from employees. "We always have fun with our philanthropic initiatives," said Glen. "To put a fun spin and encourage internal donations for the FFG Ends Lupus campaign, we have organized a group of employees who will perform singing telegrams to FFG offices across the country in return for donations made."

Ohio-based accounting and consulting firm HW&Co. announced that Principal Michael R. Muniak, CPA, has been appointed to the board of trustees of the United Way of Medina County (UWMC).
The UWMD is one of more than 1,300 local, volunteer-led United Way affiliates in the United States, all working to advance the common good in their respective communities by focusing on education, helping citizens achieve financial stability, and promoting healthy living - the building blocks necessary for all Medina County citizens to lead productive lives.
