The 2012 London Olympics isn't the only forum where international communities have joined together to reach a common goal this summer.
On July 2, 2012, the American Institute of CPAs (AICPA) announced it has expanded its website, ThisWaytoCPA.com, to allow international students to become members.
The website, designed to educate college students and CPA exam candidates about the path to becoming a CPA, now contains information to help international students understand the process of registering for the CPA exam and becoming a US CPA while living overseas.
The US CPA exam is administered internationally as a service to foreign nationals as well as in response to escalating international demand for US CPA licensure. In 2010, the last year before international administration, more than 10,000 international candidates traveled to the United States to take the US CPA exam.
Craig Mills, AICPA vice president for examinations and CPE, said the change in the way international candidates can now take the Uniform CPA Examination is one of the reasons for increased interest in the exam internationally.
"For years, foreign nationals and international candidates who wanted to sit for the Uniform CPA Examination had to travel to the United States," said Mills. "Roughly one year ago, the AICPA and NASBA launched the Uniform CPA Examination internationally as a service to those overseas who seek to obtain their CPA license. Initially the examination was offered at testing sites in Bahrain, Kuwait, Lebanon, Japan, and the UAE, with the addition of Brazil earlier this year."
Mills said allowing the exam to be processed internationally has served to increase both awareness and access to the US CPA exam internationally.
Scott Moore, AICPA senior manager, college and university initiatives, said the AICPA felt it was important to provide international candidates a means to learn more about the process of earning their US CPA licensure.
"As international candidates continue to sit for the CPA exam in greater numbers, we want to offer a resource to them which not only provides information and tools regarding the process for registering and studying for the exam, but also shares information with them about the exciting career opportunities being a CPA offers," Moore said.
Moore said expanding the AICPA's award-winning ThisWaytoCPA.com site to allow international students to register is a logical way to accomplish that goal.
