Bush signs AMT fix - millions saved from tax increase
On Wednesday, President Bush signed the House legislation that provides a one-year patch for the Alternative Minimum Tax, keeping an estimated 23 million taxpayers from an unexpected tax increase of approximately $2,000. The total amount the government is estimating it will not receive due to the patch is about $50 billion.

Useful Resources for Business Development: Part 2: Public Relations Counsel

Eva Lang, aka BV Girl
FASB 141 R

On December 4, 2007, the Financial Accounting Standards Board issued FASB Statements No. 141 (revised 2007), Business Combinations. The new standard requires the acquiring entity in a business combination to recognize all (and only) the assets acquired and liabilities assumed in the transaction; establishes the acquisition-date fair value as the measurement objective for all assets acquired and liabilities assumed; and requires the acquirer to disclose to investors and other users all of the information they need to evaluate and understand the nature and financial effect of the business combination. The revision of 141 is part of the FASB's push toward "fair value," or mark-to market accounting.

Are you ready for international accounting standards?

A few months ago the SEC issued a proposal for US companies to be able to use International Accounting Standards (IFRS). I participated in writing a comment letter on the issue and the committee felt that US businesses should be able to use IFRS instead of US GAAP..

Publisher's Note

Over the past month you've probably received at least one "ElfYourself" Christmas greeting from friends, family, or co-workers. I think I received about 30 of them. Without question, this will result in increased sales for OfficeMax, the company behind this brilliant viral marketing initiative.

You can do the same thing. No, I don't mean create a dancing elf and put your face on it; I'm talking about creating a buzz. Idea to consider: become a voice in the area you want to target and then publicize it. One easy (and successful) way you can do this is to blog. If you would like to blog about accounting within your niche industry interest (construction, forestry, auto dealers, health care, etc.), practice specialization, focused small business matters, or something else I've not mentioned here, let's discuss it.
