FASB 141R and FASB 160

The FASB issued two new accounting standards recently. FASB 141-R Business Combinations and FASB 160 - Non-controlling Interest in Consolidated Financial Statements - an amendment of ARB No. 51. FASB 141R focuses on closing the loop holes for recognizing all assets and liabilities in a business combination. FASB 160 focuses on non-controlling interests (fka minority interest). It calls for all non-controlling interest to be recognized in the equity section of the balance sheet.

Publisher's Note

When Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone, people worried about receiving calls from people to whom they had not been properly introduced. Bell suggested that people say "Ahoy, ahoy" upon picking up the receiver to answer a call. Thomas Edison thought "Hello" was a better expression, which he made well-known in 1870's society. There really has never been a time in our nation's history where we've not had to sort out how to effectively communicate. Before you head into the New Year, take some time out from your practice to examine how you communicate, how clearly, how often, etc. Ask yourself the question, "How can I improve _____?," each step of the way. You'll be surprised at the results. Happy holidays.
