House AMT relief bill passes - political wrangling continues
This week, House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Charles B. Rangel (D-NY) introduced the "AMT Relief Act of 2007," new legislation that would provide a one-year fix to the alternative minimum tax (AMT) currently poised to affect an estimated 23 million taxpayers. The bill is likely to die in the Senate.

SEC authorizes one-year SOX 404(b) extension for SMBs
The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission has agreed to provide small businesses with an additional one year extension to comply with Sarbanes-Oxley Section 404(b) internal control requirements. SEC Chairman Christopher Cox said he wants to give small companies more time to meet certain auditing requirements of the Sarbanes-Oxley corporate reform law.

Some 42 percent of survey respondents said inadequate internal control was the primary contributor in the previous year to a fraud incident against their company.

It's Always Hard to Value Things

"It's always hard to value things," said Donald Brownstein, chief executive of a hedge fund operator, Structured Portfolio Management in the article titled "When the Price Isn't Right" in the December 9, 2007 issue of the New York Times. Mr. Brownstein goes on to say "In some cases, you don't have enough information. In other cases you don't want to know the truth. In this case it's both."

Dave Burt, CPA: The Shirtsleeve Accountant's Blog
Who me? A malcontent?

I'm not sure I get it. Does anyone know what happened to the workplace nowadays? I just don't remember feeling I had any real bond with any of my employers. Am I just messed up? My first job out of college was at regional CPA firm. One day a senior partner said, with a voice that carried across the whole department, "Burt, you're going to be a lousy accountant." But then again, he had squat in billable hours and rarely brought in new clients. The other partners finally had enough of him three years later and dissolved the partnership.

Publisher's Note

There's certainly been quite a bit published about FAS 159. If you haven't read the McGladrey & Pullen FAS 159's "free pass" myth, you might want to give it a look. For those of you into rap music, take a look at what some creative Texas A&M University accounting majors produced. I'll bet you never thought you would hear a song about FAS 159! The time has come. What's next, a polka about derivatives?
