In-Depth News

Use Mind Maps to organize your thoughts, and life
Mind Maps are almost unmentioned in accountancy circles. I don't know why. They're an extraordinarily useful tool, and they can be easily generated on a computer. Mind Maps can reduce the time taken to achieve some tasks by as much as 80 percent, so it is staggering that they have attracted so little attention in a profession where, quite literally, time saved is equivalent to money made.

Publisher's Note

The United Nations has declared 2008 the International Year of the Potato. Now, I'm not really sure why the potato merits such recognition, but who am I to judge? Why not the radish?!?

OK, so what does this have to do with accounting? If something as dull and uninspiring as a spud can achieve such recognition, then it's pretty much open season on blowing your own horn. Take this as a challenge to look at your practice and your successes throughout the year - then spread the word! What may seem ordinary, usual, and predictable at your firm may be of interest to others. Think of opportunities in the press. Think of strategic moves made with clients - then make sure others in the firm know about these successes (for the sake of other clients). Think of something positive, a pat on the back if you will, for every person in your firm, and point out an accomplishment they did this year. Don't let the potato have all of the fanfare.
