CHATTING WITH DAVID MAISTER

A few weeks ago, I had a chance to sit down with David Maister, whose wisdom on managing professional services firms can now be found in AccountingWEB's official blog, "Passion, People and Principles."

Tax season presents a variety of challenges for managers. The increased workload stresses peer-to-peer and employee-supervisor/manager/employer relationships as well as relationships with clients. Because everyone is busy, it is easier to focus on the quick-fix resolutions for any problems that come up than on solutions that might prevent the problems in the first place.

"You must build your relationships before you need them," Maister said, explaining that key to getting people to work well during the busy season is how they are treated during the rest of the year.

"Most people have these [relationship building] skills in their personal lives, they just need to translate it to their business life," Maister continues.

A strong relationship based on trust is one of the cornerstones of Maister's success and a topic he returns to by many different paths in "Passion People and Principles" He will also be addressing it in his new 15-part podcast series, "Managing Professionals - Attitudes, Skills, Behaviors", beginning April 14, 2006.

"Today, business tends to have a bias against managers who are people people, Everyone, however, must begin to develop those habits and skills - no body gets a pass," Maister says.

These and other insights into the modern business world can now be found in AccountingWEB's official blog "Passion, People and Principles"

Help a Peer

Sometimes we are unaware of the knowledge we have until we begin to share what we know with others. Here is a chance for you to reach out and help a member in need of advice. Can you help with the question below?

Tax Projections for 1040

Clients During busy season I ask each 1040 client if I can do a tax projection for them on the current year. I've had a good conversion rate, but at reduced fees. I feel that if I move them up to standard rates I'll lose this work--and I want to do it for them because it's in their best interest. I could really use some advice.
