HONORING ACCOUNTANTS ON LABOR DAY

AccountingWEB would like to wish all 1.2 million individuals employed as accountants and auditors a safe and happy Labor Day. You are a wonderfully diverse group and it has been our pleasure getting to know you better as our staff has traveled around the country.

In fact, we can confidently say that the stereotypical accountant doesn't exist. A large number of you are public accountants, but you are also management accountants, auditors, forensic accountants, and educators. A quarter of wage and salary accountants work in accounting, tax preparation, bookkeeping and payroll services firms. One-tenth of you are self-employed. Most of you work in office settings, though some also work from home.

As a group, accounting professionals are mostly optimistic about the future, especially in regards to firm growth. Many firms will grow through mergers and consolidations. Yet fear of layoffs has fallen to a record low this month, indicating confidence that jobs will be maintained even in the event of an acquisition. Most of you are satisfied with your jobs.

So this Labor Day, we hope you enjoy a day of much deserved rest and relaxation. Happy Labor Day!
