FOCUS ON J.H. COHN
"We are living in a 'perfect storm' for regional firms," Tom Marino, chief executive officer of J.H. Cohn LLP, the top regional accounting firm in the Northeast, told AccountingWEB.
Opportunities in the marketplace include continuing pushdown of work from the Big Four, right now, especially ERISA work, and growth in specialized practices developed for the middle market client, according to Marino, who was joined by Robert DeMeola, partner-in-charge of the firm's New York office. Both men emphasized the New Jersey-based firm's knowledge resources, open relationships with clients and staff, and plans to expand into the New York and Long Island market. The firm has also announced that it hopes to double the number of female executives in the next two years.
"Our partners are specialists because they are recognized leaders in their industry, not just because they have a large number of clients in that area," DeMeola said, explaining that frequent contact with clients leads to a synergy that produces the best results for both the firm and the client.
Partner and staff interaction at JH Cohn are "extremely hands-on; [we work] with one another as a team does. Firm employees are passionate about the industries and the clients they serve."
The firm's growth patterns offer potential for career development, Marino says, and "we want to know from [our staff] what is your passion? It is a two-way street. But where better to grow than in a firm that's growing?"
