2006 TAX SEASON OPENS |
|||
The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) expects to file approximately 135 million individual tax returns in 2006. Last year, more than half of the nation's taxpayers filed their returns electronically. The agency expects that trend to continue, despite sending out 17.7 million 1040 tax packages to taxpayers who previously filed paper returns. Taxpayers using IRS e-file, which will be available beginning later this month, and having their refunds deposited directly into their bank accounts, can receive their refunds in two weeks or less. That's less than half the time estimated for those filing paper returns to receive their refunds. For 2006, tax returns must be filed by April 17 because "Tax Day", April 15, falls on a weekend this year. A state holiday in Massachusetts means that some taxpayers in Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Vermont and the District of Columbia, will have until April 18th to file their returns. Refunds can be tracked online using the "Where's My Refund?" tool on the IRS web site at www.irs.gov. Taxpayers unable to meet the April deadline will still need to file Form 4868, Application for Automatic Extension, however, unlike previous years they will get an additional six months to get their return in the mail. During tax season, the IRS web site is one of the most heavily used sites on the Internet. Last year there were more than 176 million visits to IRS.gov and 1.2 billion page views. The newly re-designed site has numerous tools and information to help tax professionals navigate smoothly through this tax season. |
