HOLIDAY LIGHTING SAFETY TIPS |
Chestnuts roasting on an open fire may sound like a great idea,
but not if the open fire is someone's home. Unfortunately, many
holiday decorations are potential fire hazards if not used
properly. Greenery, whether trees, garlands, wreaths, or
centerpieces, should be displayed at least three feet away from
fireplaces, radiators, candles and other sources of heat or
flame. Electrical decorations should all have been inspected by
the Underwriters Laboratory (UL). Consumers should also carefully
inspect electrical decorations for any damage, frayed cords or
exposed wires prior to plugging them in. No more than three
strings of miniature lights should be connected end-to-end and
never overload electrical outlets or extension cords. Lights on
trees or in other greenery, should be unplugged overnight and when
you leave the house. Following these tips can help ensure a happy
holiday season and keep the open fire where it belongs.
