HEALTH TIP: PREVENTING BACKPACK BACK PAIN

Sixty percent of American students between the ages of 9 and 20 reported chronic back pain related to heavy backpacks, according to a study published in the "Indian Journal of Pediatrics".

Backpacks are overloaded when they weigh more than 15 percent of the body weight of the individual wearing them. Even when backpacks are not overloaded, they need to be worn properly, with the bottom of the backpack resting in the curve of the lower back, no more than four inches below the waist. Students whose backpacks are consistently overloaded may want to consider getting a backpack with wheels.
