Backing up computer data and files means saving it someplace other than a computers hard drive. Many people choose to save back-up copies of files on a network drive. The problem there is that the network drive and the hard drive are commonly in the same building. If something happens to the building both computer and network could be damaged or destroyed. For this reason it is wise to regularly create backups on a mobile storage device, such as a CD, DVD, tape or USB drive, use off site storage facilities, such as a server or network drive housed at the provider's location, or even store data online.
