EXCEL TIP: COUNTING NON_NUMBERS

Sometimes, it seems like Excel is everywhere and used for just about everything. Spreadsheets, of course were designed, primarily to keep track of numbers. Yet text and other non-numbers seem to keep sneaking in.

If you need to know how many times text or other non-numeric data appear in a column on an Excel spreadshet use the COUNT feature. This feature is similar to the SUM feature, but can be used with non-numeric items, including text. If, for instance you want to know how many non-numeric entries are in column B simply enter "=COUNT(B27:B133)"

This feature is especially useful when trying to determine the total number of payments made over a period of time, how many new clients were generated by an advertising campaign, the number of indiviudals attending an event or other similar information.
