Still Counting: CPA Firm Joins Florida Ballot Count

Judicial Watch, the independent watchdog group, has been authorized by Palm Beach County Circuit Court Judge Jorge La Barga, to access and count the county's disputed presidential ballots, including oversees absentee ballots. Over 400 citizens from across the country are joining the effort, converging on Palm Beach County to scrutinize the ballots.The non-partisan group, Judicial Watch, will use statistical and accounting techniques, with the aid of members of the local Johnson Lambert & Co.

IRS Announces New Employment Tax Deposit Rules

Under previous law, businesses with employment taxes of less than $1,000 per quarter could make their tax payments quarterly, while other businesses make more frequent tax deposits. Now, starting January 1, 2001, businesses with employment taxes of less than $2,500 per quarter will be able to make quarterly payments, instead of the monthly payments they were making previously."The new standard will reduce the paperwork and red tape that small businesses face," according to IRS Commissioner Charles O. Rossotti.

Ad Firm Closes After Audit; CFO Kills Himself

The Dallas-based advertising firm of Berry-Brown has suffered more than their share of losses. A story that ran in this week's Dallas Morning News confirmed that the 23-year-old firm has dismissed all 46 employees and has closed its doors, all thanks to an audit that revealed $6.25 million in missing funds.To add to the woes, the audit also uncovered the fact that the CFO, Philip Schieber, had embezzled the money before killing himself last month.
