House and Senate Join Forces to Change New Small Business Tax Ruling

The small business committee chairmen from the U.S. Senate and House have joined forces to ask Treasury Secretary Lawrence Summers to rethink the recent release of Revenue Procedure 2000-22, which requires small businesses with average annual gross receipts of over $1,000,000 to use the accrual method of accounting.Previous law provided a threshold of $5,000,000 in annual gross receipts before the accrual method was required.

New Study Finds Disturbing News re 401(k) Rollovers

A new study by the consulting firm of Hewitt Associates shows the disturbing trend that most Americans who are entitled to take money from a 401(k) plan with them when they leave a job are cashing out the plan rather than reinvesting the money in another retirement fund.Sixty-eight percent of workers aged 20 to 59 who received distributions from 401(k) plans last year chose to take the money and pay the tax consequences.

IMA Names new Executive Director

The Institute of Management Accountants (IMA) have just named the new executive director to head the 70,000-member organization.Assuming the position is David T. Schweitz, a veteran in the financial services industry who has 25 years' experience in the profession. He most recently served as president and CEO of Mid Atlantic Farm Credit.Schweitz said one of his primary initial goals will be 'to get IMA's members excited about being members. Europe to Impose International Accounting Standards by 2005

Europe-watchers say the European Commission is poised to require listed European companies to use international accounting standards (IAS) by 2005.According to sources, Commission officials have been consulting with national governments and accountancy bodies for some time over amendments to the fourth and seventh accounting directives. The Commission has encouraged national governments to allow the use of IAS within their jurisdictions; France, Germany and Austria already do so.
