Tax Tip: Charitable Contributions

When preparing to file your 2000 federal tax return, don't forget your contributions to charitable organizations. Your donations can add up to a nice tax deduction if you itemize on IRS Form 1040, Schedule A. Here are a few tips to help make sure your contributions pay off on your tax return. To be deductible, contributions must be made to qualified organizations. Organizations can tell you if they are qualified and if donations to them are deductible.

The U.S. Department of Labor has issued a paper on the impact of telecommuting in the U.S. The paper, called "Telework and the New Workplace in the 21st Century," presents the work of scholars, economists, social scientists and others who were present at a symposium conducted by the DOL last October. The paper outlines three issues of telecommuting. They include telework's potential to help employers address the skills-shortage, its potential to help workers meet family obligations, and its potential to help society achieve greater workplace diversity.

Veteran Consultant Don Istvan Has Died

Donald Istvan, a consultant to the accounting profession for many years, has died at age 69 at his home in Barrington, Illinois.Born August 15, 1931 in Cleveland, Ohio, he passed away Friday, January 5, 2001 at home. From 1972-1992, Don was a professor at the DePaul University School of Accountancy who taught the basics of accounting to first-year students. He was also President of D.F. Istvan Associates, Inc., a consulting company, until his retirement in 1995.

Salary Gap Between CFOs and CEOs Narrowing

A survey conducted by Maryland based Panel Publishers reveals that CFO compensation has been surging over the last four years in small to medium sized companies. The overall growth of CFO salaries at many of these companies reflects the economic expansion of the last few years. The survey also found an impressive rise in CFO stock option awards as a percentage of salary. Over the last four years, CFOs’ median total direct compensation as a percentage of what their CEOs earn rose 10 percent at the surveyed firms.

New proposed regulations issued by the Treasury Department offer to do away with the complicated task of calculating IRA distributions. No longer will taxpayers have to rely on complicated life expectancy tables, nor will beneficiaries have to be locked in forever.The required distributions will henceforth be determined from a single tax table which produces the smallest required minimum distribution allowed under the old rules.
