The computer giant, Microsoft, and Andersen Consulting have teamed to form a new company called Avanade. The new company will focus on providing Internet services that utilize Microsoft’s Windows 2000 operating system.This new venture is a big move for Microsoft. The company is throwing $1 billion in the kitty to push its way into the e-commerce services sector. Andersen is bellying up to the table with other resources such as training, services and intellectual property.

E-Returns Expected to Grow to 50 percent of Total by 2007

According to recent statistics suggested by the IRS, basic tax returns that are filed electronically in 2007 are expected to total almost 50 percent of all returns filed during a typical tax season. Last year the total was 125.1 million returns.In 2000 alone, it is expected that 33.6 million returns will be filed over the Internet for 26.5 percent of the total.

How do Lawyers Feel About CPA Alliances?

There have been many stories over the last several months about CPA firm alliances with lawyers to gain a stronger share of the business marketplace, but how do the lawyers feel about such a move?Mixed, according to an e-mail survey of 300 Ohio attorneys. Half of the respondents indicated they are opposed to such alliances (which require changes to the Code of Conduct), 25 percent supported changes, and 23 percent were neutral or wanted more information.The survey was held in conjunction with hearings held by the Ohio Bar Association to gauge support of the alliances.

One of the recently emerging--and popular--dot.com companies is Snap, and H&R Block is counting on the site's popularity to boost its own bottom line.A distributing and marketing agreement was signed this week that makes Block the primary content provider on Snap's Tax Center.Snap is part of NBCi, short for the NBC Network's Internet services division. The Snap site will offer services similar to Block's own tax site, such as online tax preparation and filing.

Bell Canada Upgrades AICPA WebTrust

Communications giant Bell Canada has decided to upgrade its WebTrust program to Version 2.0, the newest format for the electronic verification program developed by the American Institute of CPAs.Enhancements to the new version includes principles and criteria for privacy protection, and resolving any customer or client problems.
