Majority of Fast-Growth CEOs Likely To Move On

Most CEOs of America's fastest-growing private companies say they are likely to step down within the next ten years, but almost half have put little to no thought into succession planning. Nearly two-thirds (65%) of surveyed CEOs plan to move on within a decade or less: 42 percent within five years, and 23 percent in five to ten years. And their exit plans? Most (51 percent) anticipate a sale to another company.

GE Tops Ranking of Best Companies for Executive Development

General Electric ranks as the best company for developing executive talent, according to a new ranking on the topic by Executive Development Associates, a global executive development firm. The San Francisco-based firm conducted a survey of chief learning officers and human resources executives at companies around the globe in December 2004. The respondents each received a listing of more than 75 companies and voted for companies with exceptional executive development strategy, systems and programs. "GE received 67.7 percent of the votes.

Arleen Thomas, CPA, vice president, currently of Professional Standards and Services, will now serve as senior vice president of Member Competency and Development. IRS Issues Final Regulations on Student Exception from Employment Taxes

Last week, the Department of the Treasury and Internal Revenue Service issued final regulations on the exception from employment taxes for services provided by students when those services are performed for a school, college or university. The regulations were issued earlier this year in proposed form and a hearing was held on June 16. Although wages paid to students for working for a school, college or university are subject to income tax, a special exception excludes the wages for such services from FICA and FUTA taxes if certain requirements are met.

Self-employment rates for women, blacks, and Latinos have risen sharply since 1979, according to a study released this week by the Office of Advocacy of the U.S. Small Business Administration. Business Growth Continues to Fuel Demand for Accountants

Chief financial officers (CFOs) surveyed for the Robert Half International Financial Hiring Index expect a net 5 percent increase in the hiring of accounting professionals in the first quarter of 2005, down one point from the previous quarter's forecast but three points above projections made this time last year. Nine percent of executives polled plan to add staff, and 4 percent anticipate reductions in personnel. Eighty-six percent of respondents foresee no change in staff levels. The national poll includes responses from 1,400 CFOs from a stratified random sample of U.S.

Accounting Grads Face Best Job Prospects in Years

College graduates with accounting degrees are entering the working world at a good time - recruiters are eager, jobs are plentiful and offers are attractive. Four in five employers called the job market for new grads good, very good or excellent, according to a new survey by the National Association of Colleges and Employers. Last year, fewer than two in five described the job market that way, the Associated Press reported.Observers say graduates are facing the best prospects since the dot.com boom. The survey predicted college hiring will increase 13 percent over last year.
