Maryland CPAs participate in ABC's Extreme Makeover: Home Edition

Rockville, MD-based Aronson & Company employees are well-known for their commitment to the community, but recently they took that commitment to the "extreme." During the second week in November, the firm sponsored its client, Dan Ryan Builders, in their efforts with ABC's Extreme Makeover: Home Edition television show, which changes the lives of struggling families by remodeling their homes.

KPMG's virtual World Jobs Fair generates thousands of applications

With more than 20,000 registrants and 40-plus countries participating, the KPMG World Jobs Fair, a 48-hour global virtual recruiting event, more than lived up to its name."It was huge," Lisa Rolston, KPMG associate director for eSourcing strategy and branding for experienced hire recruiting, told AccountingWEB. "It surpassed my expectations."Approximately 9,300 applications were generated during the virtual gathering in September and the company is still reviewing them.

It is said that "truth is stranger than fiction." While I'm not entirely convinced of that, I can testify that the truth can be pretty damned strange. My goal in this series will be to give the reader an uncensored look at entry-level life in a Big 4 firm. It won't contain any deep insights into "office life," mostly because I rarely spent any time in the office. I couldn't even tell you the color of the carpet. Deloitte accuses former partner of insider trading

Deloitte has filed a lawsuit against a former partner in its Chicago office, contending the man traded on inside information related to audit clients.Thomas Flanagan, a 30-year Deloitte partner, allegedly bought stock in an unnamed publicly traded company one week prior to Walgreen's July 2007 announcement that it bought Option Care Inc., the Chicago Tribune reported. Flanagan, 61, served as advisory partner, managing the client relationship with Walgreens.

PwC pays $97 million to Ohio pension funds in AIG case

Big Four firm PricewaterhouseCoopers has agreed to pay three Ohio pension funds $97.5 million to settle its part of a securities class action filed against American International Group (AIG).The settlement stems from a suit filed against AIG in 2004 by three Columbus-based pension funds: the Ohio Public Employees Retirement System, the State Teachers Retirement System of Ohio, and the Ohio Police & Fire Pension Fund. The pension funds wanted damages for shares bought between October 1999 and April 2005.

Crowe Horwath LLP has signed an agreement to acquire certain assets of California-based Grobstein, Horwath & Company LLP, with a planned closing date of Dec. 1, 2008. Crowe Horwath LLP is one of the largest public accounting and consulting firms in the U.S.Founded in 1966, Grobstein has served Southern California for more than 40 years. The firm has more than 120 professionals working at its offices in Sherman Oaks and Costa Mesa.
