J.H. Cohn and Marden, Harrison & Kreuter combine services

J.H. Cohn LLP, the largest independent accounting and consulting firm in the Northeast, has combined its services with Marden, Harrison & Kreuter, CPAs, P.C. of White Plains, New York, effective July 19. The former Marden, Harrison & Kreuter will operate as Marden, Harrison & Kreuter, A Division of J.H. Cohn. Marden, Harrison & Kreuter is a full-service accounting and consulting firm, with more than 50 professionals and a diverse client base which include real estate developers and construction contractors. The firm offers a broad spectrum of accounting, tax and consulting services.

Deloitte and AAA to award Wildman Medal to three outstanding academics

The Deloitte Foundation, a not-for-profit arm of Deloitte & Touche USA LLP, and the American Accounting Association (AAA) have confirmed the winners of the 2007 Deloitte/AAA Wildman Medal. The team of three outstanding members of the academic community who will receive the honor includes Professor Vivien Beattie, University of Glasgow; and Professors Stella Fearnley and Richard Brandt, University of Portsmouth, all from the United Kingdom.

Alabama accounting firms merge

Birmingham, AL-based CPA firm, Lovoy Summerville & Shelton, has acquired Granberry & Associates based in the Auburn-Opelika area. The combined firm will have 25 employees to serve more than 800 clients along U.S. 280 between the two cities, said Donald Howell, shareholder and partner of the firm. "Now with two offices together, we can bring more specialized people in to offer more services," he said.

Charges dropped against former KPMG execs, appeal filed

Federal indictments have been dropped against 13 KPMG execs accused of orchestrating a tax shelter scheme that cost the government $2.5 billion. Cases are still pending against three former KPMG executives for whom the firm was not required to pay legal fees, Robert Pfaff, John Larson and David Greenberg, and two others who are not affiliated with KMPG.

Grant Thornton International announces merger

David McDonnell, chief executive officer of Grant Thornton International has announced the merger between Grant Thornton's Irish member firm and RSM Robson Rhodes in Ireland, which follows on from the merger of Grant Thornton UK LLP and the UK division of RSM Robson Rhodes LLP. The merger creates a firm with the depth of resource, expert capability and market credibility to make it the leader in its chosen marketplaces. The new organization will now operate as Grant Thornton Ireland, as the merger was completed on 1 July 2007.

Marcum & Kliegman LLP, Certified Public Accountants and Consultants, has signed a letter of intent to acquire the CBIZ/Mayer Hoffman McCann accounting and tax practice in New York City. "This will be a good tuck-in acquisition," stated Marcum & Kliegman Managing Partner Jeffrey Weiner. "They deal with a lot of high-net-worth individuals and have a solid trust and estate practice.

PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP (PwC) has agreed to pay $225 million to settle securities and accounting fraud claims relating to the Tyco International Ltd. securities class action, presently pending in the United States District Court for the District of New Hampshire before Judge Paul Barbadoro.

Grant Thornton, PCAOB spar over inspection report

The PCAOB has released its inspection report on CPA firm Grant Thornton covering the period from May 2006 through January 2007. Audits of eight companies were examined. Several audit deficiencies are noted in the report, such as a failure to identify or appropriately address errors in the application of GAAP in the selected audits, including errors that seemed likely to be material to financial statements.

Public accounting and consulting firm Crowe Chizek and Co. LLC has announced its intention to combine practices with Enterprise Financial Consulting Group LLC, a Mount Laurel, N.J.-based provider of risk management consulting, internal audit, Sarbanes-Oxley compliance, and technical accounting.The two firms will operate under the Crowe name.
