According to a forecast by the Transaction Services group of PricewaterhousCoopers, M&A activity could increase even more dramatically in 2000.Several factors will drive the growth. Informix Receives SEC Sanctions; EY Involved

The Securities and Exchange Commission has hit Informix, a database software firm in Menlo Park, CA, with administrative sanctions related to fraud and the performance of previous company executives.Between 1994 and 1997, the SEC discovered that Informix had falsly reported increased revenues of $295 million and earnings of $244 million during the three-year period.Also involved in the case is Ernst & Young, who was the auditor at the time.

IRS Gives Banner Ads a Break

Uniting tax code with a new technology such as the Internet can be difficult. For now, the Internal Revenue Service has decided to leave companies alone that swap banner ads on web sites.Barter exchanges are arrangements where companies swap ads and where no cash changes hands. Companies won't have to report these transactions with fair-market values of less than $1. The IRS believes most banner-ad swaps have a value much lower than $1.

PWC Chosen by American Airlines for Reservations Upgrade

American Airlines has awarded a $70 million agreement to Big 5 giant PricewaterhouseCoopers and Sabre to upgrade the airline's reservation system.The goal is to lessen customer on-hold wait times by 25 percent through an overhaul of the telephone and computer system. Along with Sabre, PWC will develop systems in logic, databases and a new graphical user interface.The new venture also will transfer to the airline's Web site to enable faster completion of online mechanics.

Falsified Records Sends San Francisco CPA to Prison

A San Francisco CPA will spend at least one year in Federal prison for his role in altering tax returns to secure more than $2.1 million in loans from five banks.Regen Chinn of Chinn Accountancy Corp. was found guilty for his role and was sent to prison for 33 months. Also charged was Jack Young Jr., owner of Clement Tour and Travel, for his part in the scheme.

TAXWARE International, Inc., the leading developer of transaction based, worldwide commercial tax software, is currently developing software for service providers that will enable taxes to be tabulated for anyone in the United States. The new software will even automatically report those taxes to the proper authority.Although the feds have halted government bodies from taxing online sales until 2001, that doesn’t prevent some states from imposing a usage tax. CFP Board Reports Record Number of Candidates

According to the Certified Financial Planner Board, a record-setting 1,920 people sat for the November 1999 CFP Certification Examination. Of that number, 54.3 percent passed the exam.Since it’s inception, 12,373 people have passed the 10-hour, two-day exam that covers 106 interrelated financial planning topics. The pass rate is 57.3 percent of the total participants who have sat for the exam.Individuals with certain degrees and professional credentials may take the exam without verifying educational topic coverage.
